Bullied At Work?  Stressed & Wondering How To Cope?

  • Are you preoccupied by worry, sadness, anger or feeling trapped as a result of  workplace bullying, mobbing or harassment?

  • Does the thought of going to work in a hostile atmosphere interfere with your ability to sleep, rest or enjoy life?  Are you worried your overall health may be declining as a result of these problems?

  • Are you concerned you may be suffering from anxiety, depression or post traumatic stress from repeated harassment at work?

  • Have you been taking sick leave more frequently to avoid mistreatment on the job?

You may be a target of Workplace Bullying – a legal form of personal harassment in British Columbia and most Canadian provinces, except Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and most American states.  Workplace bullying is a form of systematic abuse that can cause serious vocational displacement and psychological harm such as chronic stress, anxiety and trauma.  This abuse can either occur one to one, usually supervisor to employee, or in a group, where it is known as ‘mobbing’.

Additional signs of bullying can include:  shunning or put downs by colleagues or supervisors;  being the subject of ongoing office gossip and jokes;  having your job duties restricted or being demoted for no legitimate reason;  finding yourself trying to anticipate a supervisor or co-worker’s behavior ahead of time so you can try and protect yourself;  trying to resolve the problem by talking to managers, Human Resources or union reps only to feel discounted or blamed.

If you have experienced any of these behaviors at work you need to take action to protect yourself and your livelihood now.

EBook - What Every Target Of Workplace Bullying Needs To Know

When targets experience repeated workplace bullying they feel under threat.  An intense stress reaction occurs in response to this aggressive behavior.  Target’s bodies start to produce the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones prepare targets to rally to protect themselves by either confronting, escaping or becoming immobilized in the face of the stressor.  This is also known as the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response.  When targets can’t escape the chronic stress of repeated bullying, they cannot discharge that tension and rebound physically or psychologically.  Stress then gets ‘trapped’ in their bodies, and targets can experience that stress as trauma-like symptoms such as intense fear, anxiety, depression, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, irritability, loss of confidence and low self-worth.  Some targets of bullying also begin to lose perspective, and come to believe that they somehow invited or deserve this abuse.  Many targets of bullying are unaware of the extent of their psychological distress, or wait until their symptoms become severe before seeking help.  This can potentially make recovery harder, longer, complicated or incomplete.  The good news is that you can take action today to stop the harm of workplace bullying.

If you are being bullied you have 3 choices:  1/ Suffer in silence, 2/ Stay and stand up for yourself, or 3/ Move on.  Number 1 is an option no one should have to choose, but many targets find themselves in this position because they can't believe this is happening, feel afraid or simply don't know what to do.

Counselling and Coaching can help you find your way past the confusion and hurt  of bullying!

It can be very difficult deciding when to fight for a job you want and deserve to hold on to, or when to leave for your own sanity because you have been so demoralized by bullying.  If you are 'sitting on the fence' about what to do, I can help you make that tough decision, so you can feel confident and maintain your mental health.  If you have already left your job due to bullying, I can help you restore your psychological well being and rebuild your career.
