How I Work To Help You Achieve The Psychological Well Being You Deserve

Glynis Sherwood MEd, CCC, CSAC, has an eclectic and practical counselling approach that integrates effective counselling, psychotherapy and coaching methods to best meet your needs in recovering from grief, loss, anxiety, and addictive behaviours.

I typically meet with people a minimum of once per week to accelerate the recovery process.  During our initial 1 to 2 sessions we will map out the road to the positive changes you are seeking As I have a goal oriented approach, I don't work with people session by session, but rather until you have achieved your goals.

Here's how we will work together to get your life moving in the direction you want:

  • First, we identify and clarify the personal or emotional challenges you are currently facing
  • Second, we figure out what you want your life to look like - what would be better, more satisfying and fulfilling
  • Third, we determine your counselling goals - what needs to happen to achieve the psychological well being you are seeking
  • Fourth, we start to develop a flexible action plan to help you reach your recovery or wellness goals
  • Finally, we work together regularly - usually weekly - until you achieve your goals

Anna’s Recovery Story – Rising Above Stress, Anxiety and Food Addiction

“With Glynis's help I overcame my anxiety in a matter of weeks.  Her support and reassurance were very helpful.  She taught me several excellent strategies for managing anxiety.  Overall, I feel more confident and optimistic about my ability to manage anxiety.  And I'm no longer eating to cope with stressI feel more independent because I can rely on myself to deal with whatever anxiety comes up."

Research consistently shows that the most effective counselling, psychotherapy or coaching is based on a positive relationship between counsellor and client.  My counselling approach draws from a variety of time-tested therapeutic methods, combined with practical solutions, to help you feel your best in the shortest time possible.  I approach counselling holistically, meaning that a healthy mind is supported by a healthy body, and vice versa.  So physical health care strategies are sometimes incorporated into the counselling.  The key features of my counselling approach are also some of the greatest sources of benefits to you:

  • Customized:  As every person or situation is unique, I take a ‘tailor made’ approach to each individual client, couple or family, based on particular concerns, problems, needs, and personality.

  • Eclectic Counselling Style:  One size definitely doesn’t fit all.  My work has its roots in the following therapeutic traditions:

Cognitive-Behavioural - supports the development of rational thinking and reality-based belief systems that can help you overcome chronic grief, anxiety, depression, trauma and addictive thinking.

Solution-Focused – will help you identify and build on your strengths, and develop a 'vision' for your life to help you create the fulfilling recovery you desire.

Brief Psychodynamic -  focuses on gaining insight into the influence of past events on present behaviour and emotions, so you can understand the roots of your difficulties and make more beneficial, conscious choices in dealing with problems.   Helpful in resolving repetitive patterns of emotional distress, negative behaviours and difficult relationships.

Narrative – helps you define and assume ownership of your recovery, so you can begin a new ‘chapter’ in life

Body Centered – helps calm the central nervous system, which is integral in reducing anxiety, symptoms of trauma and post-acute withdrawal.  Guided relaxation, abdominal breathing, hypnosis and meditation are some of the approaches used to facilitate this process.

Journalling - Writing helps to 'externalize' pain, and make thoughts, emotions and plans more understandable and facilitates concrete change.  Journalling is an important element in healing from chronic grief, and 2nd stage addiction recovery.

  • Coaching:  Where appropriate, I use a more directive approach, and will guide you to make action plans and take concrete steps in putting these plans into place.  For example, figuring out how to take action to support grieving children, other loved ones or yourself.

  • Short-Term:  I specialize in helping you overcome problems and meet your goals and needs as quickly as possible – usually in 8 to 20 weeks.  I recommend that you commit to a minimum of 4 to 8 weekly sessions to begin to see the results you desire. If longer term support is required, we can continue to work together as needed.

  • Results-Oriented:  Whether you are new to counselling or have undergone counselling before, I am confident that counselling can help you ‘recover’ your life so you feel whole, optimistic and resilient.  You should begin to feel more hopeful about your life soon after you begin counselling.  In fact, many people report positive results during or immediately after the first session!
