Frequently Asked Questions About Recovery Counselling Solutions
How long will I have to see you? How long does recovery counselling last?
- The length of recovery counselling differs for each individual, couple or family. It depends on needs, the depth and duration of problems, and the commitment of participants. Glynis works from a variety of brief counselling models that focus on problem solving, overcoming restrictive beliefs and behaviour patterns, developing personal insight, and emotional connection to oneself and others. With this eclectic and personalized approach, many problems can be resolved in 8 to 20 sessions. Many people begin to experience positive change and more hope after just one session!
- A good rule of thumb is to attend recovery counselling until you are steadily making progress finding and implementing solutions to your problem(s), you are coping better and feeling more content and in control of your life. After that, you have the option of ‘checking in’ periodically in person or by phone, or reconnecting as the need arises.
Length and frequency of counselling sessions
First Meeting: The first meeting is 55 - 75 minutes long for individuals, and 75 - 90 minutes long for couples and families. During this meeting we focus on getting an in-depth overview of your concerns, and help you set goals so you can be clear about what you want to achieve from counselling.
Ongoing Meetings: Individual meetings are 50 or 75 minutes long; and couple or family meetings are 75 or 90 minutes long, based on need. You may choose from the following options to best meet your needs as you progress:
1. “I/We need regular support right now” – Meet once per week in person or by phone for 50 to 90 minutes
2. “Help me/us get through this quickly” – Meet twice per week in person or by phone for 50 to 90 minutes
3. “Things are starting to get steadily better for me/us” – Meet every other week in person or by phone for 50 to 90 minutes
4. “I’m/We are doing well but want to check in periodically” – Meet once per month in person or by phone for 25, 50 or 75 minutes
